Hamstring Exercises

Do you want to build hamstring muscle? Why not check out the following hamstring exercises which are very effective at adding size and strength to the back of the legs.

The hamstrings are usually trained in conjunction with the quadriceps on a leg workout and are important muscles to train for a variety of reasons with the most important being to give thickness to the rear thighs and to keep the body looking in proportion.

Hamstring Anatomy

The hamstring muscle group is made up of 3 separate muscles which are:

  • Biceps Femoris
  • Semitendinosus
  • Semimembranosus

These muscles all combine to make up the rear thigh and the function of which to allow the lower leg to curl at the knee joint.

Warm Up & Hamstring Stretches

Exercises for hamstrings are not only used to build leg muscle but also serve to build a prevention of injuries around the leg which is so often caused by sports such as running. If you've ever experienced a hamstring tear then I'm sure you know only to well how painful that can be!

Hamstring injuries are the most common form of all leg injuries so it goes without saying that hamstring stretches must be done before and after any heavy leg workout to prevent serious damage but also just to prevent and alleviate sore hamstrings resulting from weight training which tends to kick in within 48 hours of a hamstring workout known as DOMS (Delayed onset muscle soreness).
