These 3 heads are responsible for different ranges of movement depending on which direction the arm is raised and should be all trained either independently or together to give the shoulder a full and rounded appearance. Exercises For The Shoulders Some exercises such as the dumbbell shoulder press mainly target the anterior (front) head of the shoulder where as other exercises such as dumbbell bent over lateral raise will only involve the posterior deltoid. With this in mind it's important to pick your deltoid exercises carefully to ensure all of the shoulder muscle is trained effectively.
