Shoulder Exercises

Exercises for the shoulders are used to shape and build the delts and are a must for adding width to to upper body and building an impressive upper physique.

Shoulder Anatomy

The shoulders or the deltoids as they're formally known as is a muscle made up of 3 heads which are:

  • The anterior deltoid which is located at the front of the shoulder and allows the arm to raise up forwards.
shoulder muscles
  • The medial deltoid which is in the middle and lets you raise your arm up and to the side.
  • The posterior deltoid which.. you guessed it, is located at the back of the shoulder and allows the arm to raise up behind the body.

These 3 heads are responsible for different ranges of movement depending on which direction the arm is raised and should be all trained either independently or together to give the shoulder a full and rounded appearance.

Exercises For The Shoulders

Some exercises such as the dumbbell shoulder press mainly target the anterior (front) head of the shoulder where as other exercises such as dumbbell bent over lateral raise will only involve the posterior deltoid. With this in mind it's important to pick your deltoid exercises carefully to ensure all of the shoulder muscle is trained effectively.
